The one that got away

Two actually. There are two photographs that exist only in my mind.

1. A picture of Matt. We went to Florida with some friends for spring break during our sophomore year of college, and decided to swing by Daytona Beach for the afternoon on our way back up to VA. We were walking barefoot on the beach right where the waves meet the shore; Matt was wearing a white t-shirt and had his khaki pants rolled up a few inches. The breeze was perfect, the sunlight was perfect...and the camera was in the car.

2. The first week or so that I was at Hopkins, I had to go to the occupational health center and get the HepB vaccine because I was working with patient blood samples. I was on the shuttle bus somewhere in East Baltimore, and we stopped at a light. To the left was a small brick abandoned lot, covered in graffiti. A single, huge sunflower was growing in the center of the lot.

Concept Shots

I'm not exactly sure what that means, other than the fact that for all these shots I had an idea in my head (either before or after I saw something) and made the shot happen, as opposed to others where I see something and pull out the camera and take the shot right there. These all required a bit of planning or arranging, even if it was just figuring out where to park. I have a huge guilt complex about parking in a "No Parking" zone, even if it is just for half a minute or so.

East Baltimore

Lest I become typecast as a nature photographer after my first post, this set has a decidedly more urban flair.

I also wanted to respond to a comment from my last post that I was thinking about, that a good picture tells a story. I think that's true, sometimes. But sometimes I think a picture can be meaningful just in of itself. An interesting pattern, an unusual angle, experimenting with lighting or color or zoom. For me, sometimes the composition of the picture is more meaningful than the subject matter itself. It's really all one big experiment anyways, I've never tried to be artistic in any way with the camera before this.

I may make another post this weekend - I have a few potential shots in my head that I haven't been able to work in yet.

First Shots

I'm a photoblogger? So I decided to give this a shot. Here's the products of my hour-long walk around the neighborhood today. I'll try to post new pictures around once a week or so.
